Listen to the game here.

York- Coming into Monday night’s softball game, the York Dukes high school girls softball team knew it would be a tough battle facing Class B foe Crete.

The Crete Cardinals, ranked number one, had 25 homeruns as team for the season, and York knew what they were capable of at the plate.

Dukes pitcher Hannah Norquist gave up a home run in the first inning to the always tough Izzy Eltzy of Crete, and the Cardinals were ahead 1-0.

She settled in after that striking out six of the next 11 Crete hitters.

York, although disciplined at the plate, couldn’t get much going off Cardinal pitch Lexi Mach. That was until the fourth inning when they put a tink in her armor.

Alexis Linder came up in the bottom of the fourth with a runner on and a 3-2 count and took the next pitch over the centerfield wall for only her second dinger of season. The home run gave the Dukes the 2-1 lead, and from there they never looked back.

The Dukes scraped together three more runs on some timely hitting by Linder, Bailey Robinson, and Kathryn Martin.

Linder ended up 3-4 on the night with the homer, a double, and a single, driving in three of the five Duke runs.

Crete wasn’t rolling over. After Kaitlyn Wendt lead off the 6th inning with a walk, pitcher Lexi Mach hit a two run home run to narrow the scoring gap, 5-3. Crete scored one more in the 7th making the score 5-4, and that’s when Norquist did what she did all night, struck out the last batter to end the game, and give York the upset.

Norquist pitched seven innings, gave up only three hits on four runs, with three walks, while fanning 12.

Both Crete and York will start District play Thursday in David City.
