Lyons-The BRLD Boys and Girls Basketball Teams took a doubleheader from Oakland-Craig at home Friday night in a pair of games aired on 107.9 the Bull.
The Wolverines won the girls game 69-39 and the boys game 66-53.
In the girls game, BRLD jumped out to a 19-6 lead after one, and won the 2nd quarter 17-9 to take a 36-15 lead into the locker room.
The Wolverines outscored the Knights 20-9 in the 3rd quarter to go up 56-24 at the end of three.
Oakland-Craig won the 4th quarter 15-13.
Paige Peters had a game-high 20 points to lead the Wolverines while Vicki Gatzemeyer had 18, all in the 1st half. Sophia Henneman chipped in 12, and Mariah Petersen totaled 7.
BRLD Head Coach Rod Peters. “It was good balance. I was really worried because Coach Anderson does a really good job of coaching man-to-man defense. And you watch it. And they do such an excellent job of covering shooters. And we were able to get some shooters open, and just because you get some shooters open you still got to make the shot. I thought Vicki really did a nice job that first half being aggressive with the basketball. She had some tough looks inside. And Sophie, she’s a great shooter, and when she gets on, she’s really good. And the first half she was a little frustrated, she started passing the ball. Had a couple of turnovers. And I told her at halftime that next shot you shoot’s going to go in, and I really believe that with her. She does a good job shooting.”
Natalia McNeill led the Knights with a team-high 16 points. Grace Pille notched 8 while Makenna Pearson recorded 7.
BRLD improves to 10-3 on the year while Oakland-Craig falls to 11-4.
In the boys game, Oakland-Craig held a 14-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter before BRLD outscored the Knights 20-9 in the 2nd quarter to go up 32-23 at halftime.
Both teams scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score after three was 46-37 in favor of the Wolverines.
BRLD won the 4th quarter 20-16.
The Wolverines’ Kenyan Lovejoy led all players with 29 points. Jaxon Johnson notched 11 while Lucas Vogt and Darwin Snyder tallied 9 and 7, respectively.
Garrett Seagren posted a team-high 20 points for the Oakland-Craig while Garrison Dodge and Kobe Benne registered 8 and 7, respectively.
BRLD Head Coach Cory Meyer on the win. “We pushed the floor, the kids ran the floor well. We got a lay ups off it. And I got to give OC credit. I mean they wouldn’t go away. They’ve got a lot of good players on their team. A lot of good shooters. And we might make two 2’s and they might make a 3 and they’re still in it. And Garrett had a great game for them. But I thought our defense stepped up and did pretty well overall. And pretty proud of our boys.”
The Wolverines up their record to 11-1 on the year while the Knights fall to 10-5.
Both BRLD teams battle Mead on the road Saturday while both Oakland-Craig teams host Tekamah-Herman Tuesday night.
