It was gonna be tough for the Gering B&C Steel JR’s on Tuesday night. They needed to beat Alliance twice to advance to state.
Alliance’s Bower-Shankland Field was hosting the Class B Area 7 Tournament and the homestanding Spartans were pushed to the brink by Gering.
B&C Steel out-hit Alliance 11-4 in the opener, they got a extra base hit from Ryley Hoke and a winning pitching performance from Blake Greene in prevailing 6-5. Jace Heimerman came through with the game winning RBI single in the seventh inning. The game one win forced the if-necessary game two for all the marbles.
In game two Gering jumped in front, leading 2-1 after two innings. The back and forth affair seesawed to a 3-3 tie after five innings then Gering jumped back in front 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning.
Alliance then woke the bats up for good with a big 8 run bottom of the sixth, capped off by the second homer in the doubleheader from Vic Hinojosa.
Gering got two runs back in the top of the seventh but fell short by the final of 11-7 as Alliance captured the Area Tournament championship.
The tough luck loser on the mound for B&C Steel was Brady Radzymski, who pitched into the 6th inning.
Gering’s season comes to a close at 21-10.
Alliance will enter the State Tournament with a record of 29-7.
The JR’s Class B State Tournament starts this Saturday in Columbus.
