Write-in candidate Greg Schmall, a lifetime Bayard resident, is the city’s new mayor after handily defeating the two candidates on the ballot, including incumbent Michelle Coolidge.
Schmall had 288 votes, 100 more than Coolidge and challenger Scot Ouderkirk. Schmall says he was urged to run a write-in campaign this spring and decided when he did file to meet people individually.
Schmall said he went door to door and tried to talk to as many people as possible and told them the city was alright but he wanted to make it “an even better place.”
Schmall said he realizes Bayard is a bedroom community but wants to make it the best such community in the panhandle. He says street improvements, fixing of street signs, better housing and just taking care of Bayard’s resources within the city’s budget will be his priorities.
