On Monday, the Nebraska Safety Council held a press conference for National Work Safety Awareness Week.  Representatives from the Nebraska Department of Transportation, Nebraska State Patrol, and Lincoln Fire and Rescue spoke about the importance of work zone safety, roadside safety, and emergency response.

Participating victims and families of victims also attended to share their stories about the dangers of work zone and roadside safety. Additional guests included Nebraska Tow Truck operators and construction workers.

In addition to the press conference, the Nebraska Safety Council combined efforts with Drive Smart Nebraska and the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office to raise awareness through social media and radio campaigns.  The speakers emphasized the importance of avoiding distractions while driving because everybody deserves to go home at the end of the day.

According to the Nebraska Safety Council, there are an average of 950 work zone crashes each year.
