Tractor fire southeast of Mitchell causes estimated $50,000 damage

A tractor fire southeast of Mitchell Tuesday morning caused an estimated $50,000 damage but the operator of the machine escaped without injury.

Mitchell Fire Chief Jon Wurdeman told KNEB News the operator Raymond Spencer was preparing ground for planting about 5 miles southeast of Mitchell when he noticed smoke coming from the floorboard. Wurdeman said when Spencer lifted the floorboard the fire erupted and by the time firefighters arrived the tractor was fully engulfed in flames.

Wurdeman said it took about 4,000 gallons of water to put the fire out, but they managed to keep it from spreading to the attached equipment on the rear of the 17 year old tractor.
