Snowy owl spotted hanging out at north Omaha grassy area

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Residents in north Omaha have reported seeing an unusual sight _ a snowy owl that usually calls Canada home.

Omaha television station KETV reports that the white owl has been hanging out at an Interstate 680 exit in north Omaha.
Some people have reported the bird to wildlife officials, concerned that it might be injured or sick. But experts say after observing it, it appears perfectly healthy.

Joel Jorgensen is the non-game bird program manager for Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. He says there have been a few dozen sightings in the state of snowy owls this year, when there are normally only a few. Jorgensen says an abundance of the birds and a shortage of prey further north has helped push them further into Nebraska to look for food.
