After staff and the organizers met for a couple weeks to iron out the details on a promotional event this summer involving MMA fights in downtown Scottsbluff , the city council approved the event Monday night.

Police Chief Kevin Spencer told the council he was comfortable with the staffing and public safety concerns that he had earlier. Spencer said there will be 32 security officers at the event, including some of his men, to make sure the event does not get out of hand.

Legion Combat Sports and Shots Bar & Grill will hold the MMA event on June 17th outside the bar between 17th and 19th Street on Broadway, with the street dance following along 18th Street alongside the bar.

As many as 3,000 people will be at the event, which will include a beer garden

The Scottsbluff Council Monday evening also gave final approval to an  ordinance that will provide for a four percent occupational tax on hotel accommodations.

City Manager Nathan Johnson says that will provide an estimated $300,000 annually so the general fund would not have to rely so heavily on volatile sales taxes for revenue. The council then held a budget workshop and directed City Manager Nathan Johnson to make adjustments the council discussed last night to balance the budget that will be formally approved later by the council.
