Scotts Bluff County Highway Superintendent Linda Grummert says the  process of re-establishing a grade on the county’s saturated roads has begun. Seven miles of gravel roads were still closed Monday afternoon from the weekend’s heavy rain.

Grummert said, ” Right now we are able to get into the clay pits, so we are getting a stockpile of clay to repair those grade losses. Each crew just starts at a point and begins working their way east, west, north, and south. It doesn’t matter which direction you go.”

Grummert says the county plans to spend $40,000 for the clay to establish the road base and another $100,000 for additional gravel. Grummert says she will work with Region 22 Emergency Manager  Tim Newman and other local and regional entities to review whether the damage and expenditures from recent storms will reach the threshold needed  for a disaster declaration request.

Banner County Road Superintendent Tom Neal says he was pleasantly surprised how well his roads held up and no roads are closed, but there are some areas where roads are washed across. In Kimball County, three roads are closed and they will need to replace a damaged culvert on one road. There is some one way travel due to wash outs so again use caution.
