Two new additions at the Riverside Discovery Center have helped the zoo expand to having a small herd, and will provide some much needed companionship to a familiar beast.
Late last month, Zoo Director Anthony Mason and Zoo Curator Alex Henwood drove to Kansas to pick up two new bison calves.
Mason said it has been his priority since he took over to bring more animals to the zoo, and late last year they were able to reach agreement with the Kansas Zoo to bring them out to Western Nebraska to join their resident bison- Doc.
He says that Bison are herd animals, so the addition of these two new female calves will improve Doc’s overall well being.
“This is big for him too, he’s really excited,” explains Mason. “He’s been watching them and try to sniff them and talk to them from through the fence. So we think he’s going to be really excited to have them out there joining him as well.”
The two new calves will be ready for public viewing this Saturday, and Mason encourages everyone to see the bison together for the first time.
