Process to evaluate possible landfill site progressing

The process to determine whether land south of Morrill is suitable for a planned regional landfill is ramping up.

Tuesday evening the Scottsbluff council joined their partners in Gering in asking for proposals from engineering firms who would work on “design, siting, permitting and development” of a regional landfill.

Mayor Randy Meininger says it is time to see if the proposed site is viable. Meininger said, “the Bald Peak area, we have a willing seller, a signed letter of intent. But we need to have more information and this is the first step. we need to get an engineering firm that has knowledge in opening up landfills.  They can take a look at the area, and give us their expertise  so we make good decisions. ”

Meininger says even in the best scenario the two communities are still half a dozen or more years away from actually using such a landfill.

Opponents list environmental concerns, including potential storm water runoff from a land fill into irrigation canals that could damage agricultural interests and domestic water supplies.
