For the sixth time, the President of the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association is from the Gering volunteer fire department.
Lt. Parrish Abel, a veteran of 26 years with the department, was recently elected to the position at the association’s annual meeting. Abel worked his way up after being elected Second Vice President two years ago.
Abel told KNEB News, ” We deal with a lot of items in the legislature trying to make things easier for volunteers in the state. Two years ago we got the $250 tax credit passed through. ”
Abel says he wants to convince lawmakers in the upcoming session to find a way to provide cancer benefits for volunteer firefighters who contract the disease through their response to fires. Abel says cancer benefits are common among career firefighters but only two states have it for volunteer firefighters.
Abel is also a firefighter EMT with the Scottsbluff fire department.
