Lawmakers fail in efforts to override Ricketts vetoes

Nebraska lawmakers have rejected several attempts to override Gov. Pete Ricketts’ budget vetoes, citing concerns about the state’s finances despite warnings that the governor’s cuts would hurt vulnerable residents.

Senators fell three votes short Wednesday of the support needed to restore $32.4 million in proposed funding for groups that serve the elderly and people with developmental disabilities.

Senator John Stinner of Gering, Chair of the Appropriations Committee, says the cuts will especially impact Medicaid service providers like nursing homes, citing the financial issues theMitchell Health Care Center is having even with a private operator  .

Stinner voted for restoring money for probation services and for the Medicaid service providers. But Panhandle senators Steve Erdman of Bayard and Tom Brewer of Gordon both voted no.

Erdman in particular has chastised his colleagues for not having the courage to make spending cuts that reduce the size of government.
