A semi-truck driver has been charged for leaving the scene of an accident after a car-semi crash at Highway 26 and East 27th Street in Scottsbluff Wednesday evening.

The Scottsbluff Police Department said that 56 year old Kelly Schmaltz of Morrill was driving a Peterbuilt semi eastbound on Highway 26 around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday when it collided with a SUV in the intersection at 27th Street.

The driver of the Jeep SUV, 27 year old Monica Gomez of Scottsbluff, was transported to Regional West Medical Center, where the extent of her injuries are unknown. She was not listed in the hospital directory Thursday morning.

Police said that Schmaltz initially stopped after the accident, but proceeded to drive away and was located a short time later.

The SUV was totaled and the semi received $5,000 in damage. Investigation continues and the findings will be turned over to the City Prosecutor.
