MAY 31, 2018 (LINCOLN, NEB.) — The Nebraska Department of Insurance (NDOI) reminds South Sioux City residents to talk to their insurance agent or company if they have been required to evacuate their homes as a result of the recent elevator explosion.

Most homeowners policies include a benefit for “Temporary Loss of Use.” Some renters policies also include the “Temporary Loss of Use “ benefit. “This benefit is frequently available for up to two weeks when civil authority prohibits individuals from use of their property,” said Director of Insurance, Bruce Ramge.

The NDOI recommends that individuals keep all receipts for additional living expenses such as lodging and meals. Homeowners and tenants are encouraged to ask their insurance agent or company for a description of the loss of use benefits provided, and the coverage limits.

The NDOI has a brochure listing insurance company claim contact phone numbers on its website. Additional questions can be directed to the NDOI Consumer Hotline at 877-564-7323.
