Gering businessman withdraws rezoning request

Gering council documents indicate Brody Gies has withdrawn his application to rezone a vacant area at the northwest corner of Five Rocks Road and Country Club Road.

Gies had made the request to rezone the area from rural residential to neighborhood commercial so he could relocate his current business and add an accompanying barbecue restaurant. There is no indication why Gies has decided to withdraw the application after four seperate delays to continue the March public hearing on the rezoning request.

The application had been opposed by neighbors who said it amounted to spot zoning that is opposite of what is promoted in the city’s comprehensive plan and could lead to additional unwanted retail development on the 4.6 acres owned by Steve Schaneman. Safety concerns due to additional traffic and possible loss of valuation had also been expressed.
