Cornhusker State Games to start in Hemingford

The Cornhusker State Games Torch Run begins June 1 in Hemingford where local runners will carry the Torch in one-mile segments to Alliance.

Hemingford native and panhandle health advocate Jessica Davies will run the opening mile. Davies is one of six individuals to help start the Hemingford Community Foundation. This foundation serves the residents of Hemingford by recognizing and encouraging the people, organization and community.

Two Alliance runners, Jayme Nunes and Nick Kizzire will take the torch from Davies. Nunes has been running for a special cause since her dad was diagnosed with MS when she was a child. Today, she runs to honor his legacy. Before the MS Run took place in 2016, Nunes was able to raise $16,000 for MS research.

Kizzire recently ran the 122nd Boston Marathon. He was one of 56 Nebraskans who ran the marathon. He finished with a time of 2:54:05 which was good for 922nd place.

The Torch will be relayed down Hwy. 87 and should arrive at the Route 385 Cruiser Car Show at 5:30 p.m. The Route 385 Cruiser Car Show is the first of 11 events or festivals that the torch will visit.

The Torch Run, sponsored by the Nebraska National Guard and Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association, is the precursor to the 2018 Cornhusker State Games. Officials said each day of running will include 20-60 miles on local highways. The complete route and event list is available at cornhuskerstategames.com/torch_run.

The 34th annual Cornhusker State Games takes place July 20-29 in Lincoln, Omaha, and surrounding communities. Officials expect more than 11,000 participants of all ages and abilities to participate in over 60 different sport competitions. Registered participants receive a shirt and pass to Opening Ceremonies, including the pre-show Sports Fest meal with their paid athlete entry fees. Registration is still open for all participants to get the lowest fees on or before May 31.
