Columbus police officer shot, life-flighted to Omaha

Nebraska State Patrol tweeted just after midnight Friday that NSP SWAT has cleared the scene in Columbus, where a police officer had been shot.

They added that as of their last update on the officer’s condition it was a positive one, praying the next one will be even better.

“Our continued thoughts and prayers are with the CPD officer who was shot this evening,” said NSP.

Authorities confirmed to 1011 NOW a Columbus police officer has been shot in Columbus. The officer has been life-flighted to Omaha.

The Columbus Police Department said that around 7:20 p.m., a call came in to 3410 16th Street.

Two officers responded, one went around the back, one went in the front.

The officer in the front was confronted by an armed suspect with a rifle. Gunfire was exchanged, and the officer was shot twice.

The suspect was hit, as well.

The officer was life-flighted to a hospital in Omaha from Columbus Community Hospital. Columbus mayor Jim Bulkley told our media partner News Channel Nebraska the officer was in stable condition as he was flown to Omaha. Bulkley said many police officers and medical personnel joined the officer in the emergency room of Columbus Community Hospital to support him and his family.

The suspect is currently in surgery, authorities said.

Officers are still at the scene of the house, and for safety reasons, are working under the assumption that someone else may be inside. They planned to make entry to the home sometime tonight.

Columbus Police said both the Platte County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol were assisting officers on scene.

Late Thursday NSP tweeted, “Our prayers are with the Columbus PD officer who was shot tonight and also with the entire department. NSP SWAT is on scene. Please stay clear and allow law enforcement room to work.”
