A suspicious package left at the Scottsbluff Post Office prompted a late Saturday morning evacuation.
Around 11 a.m., the Scottsbluff Police Department received a call about the partially opened package that was left at the post office.
Police and Fire personnel responded and all employees and patrons were evacuated from the building. Per protocol, the Scottsbluff Police Bomb Squad was activated.
Bomb technicians went in with respiratory equipment and air monitored the post office and made sure there wasn’t any air quality issues inside. X-Rays were taken on the box and it was determined there wasn’t any explosive inside of it.
At that point, the decision was made to open the box to see its contents. Through training, crews accessed the side of the box and discovered that its contents were simply trash and debris left by an unknown person.
“It was absolutely the right call by the post office,” says Scottsbluff Firefighter DJ Glenn. “Being an unknown package in the location, being suspicious- to activate the bomb squad to come and take a look. ”
Glenn says today’s incident serves as an excellent reminder to not leave anything that could be suspicious laying around, and dispose of it properly.
Around 11:30 a.m. the scene was determined safe, and staff and patrons were allowed back inside of the building.
