Bluffs man charged in Tuesday night assault

A 37-year-old Scottsbluff man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a woman in the neck with a letter opener.

When police arrived, Cervantes was using his cell phone to record a video. He was taken to the patrol vehicle and after he was asked to hand over his phone, but he took out the SIM card and destroyed it.

Subsequent interviews with the victim and her caregiver say that Cervantes exited from his bedroom and attacked the victim- striking her in the neck and chest area with a nine inch long letter opener. The caregiver said he was going to call 911, and Cervantes reportedly took the phone and broke it.

Police say the victim received four stab wounds, puncturing the victim’s neck, cartilage within her neck and her vocal cords.

Cervantes was arrested on the charges of 1st Degree Assault, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, Interfering with a a Public Service Communication Device, and Destruction of Evidence.
