Construction is underway on a 92,000 square foot wellness center at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. Don Kohler, Vice President for Marketing and Public Relations, says the center will feature running equipment as well as equipment for class use. “It’s going to feature two levels of cardio equipment for students, two basketball courts and volleyball courts, and an aerobics and fitness room for various classes that students can take, and staff.”
Kohler says the wellness center will also feature a 90-yard indoor field turf for intramurals and other activities.
It will serve over 4,000 students. “We have upwards of 3,000 people that drive to our campus everyday, our commuter students. And then we also have 1,200-1,400 students that live on campus. So this facility’s really going to provide a nice outlet for our students who both live on campus and that commute to campus,” Kohler said.
Kohler says the wellness center will be for students and staff only.
It will be named after a couple who made a donation towards its construction, according to Kohler. “Dr. John and Jean Marshall have generously donated $2 million towards the construction of this facility, and the wellness center will be in their name.”
Kohler says the hope is to have the wellness center open by June of 2019.
