Mitchell Police Chief Mike Cotant says it is believed an apparent hoax phone call Friday night originated overseas by an individual who had access to a live video feed in our area in hopes of viewing and possibly recording the emergency response online.

Cotant says the live video was shut down and authorities say such an incident should not happen again. The information collected has been turned over to the FBI for further investigation.

Cotant says with assistance from other law enforcement agencies and the community, Mitchell Police officers Murphy and Preston were able to trace where the call came from and to the live video feed that contributed to the call .

Cotant says what occurred is associated with an internet epidemic called “Swatting”. which involves making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.

As a community, Police advise   the public to use caution when live video streaming applications and online gaming that may make you or your community vulnerable to this internet epidemic.
